Michael Kovrig (born in 1970) is a Canadian Former Diplomat and Senior Advisor from Vancouver, Canada. He works for the International Crisis Group as a senior advisor. It is a Brussels-based non-governmental organization. Furthermore, the 48-year-old advisor recently arrested and detained in China.
He was visiting Beijing. Moreover, there is a fight between the two counties over Canada’s arrest of a Chinese executive at the request of the United States. Ralph Goodale (Canadian Public Safety Minister) confirmed the news about detention on 11 December 2018.
In addition, Kovrig previously worked as a diplomat in China. He was taken into custody by the Beijing Bureau of Chinese State Security on Monday night. The former diplomat was on his regular visits to Beijing. Kovrig works as North East Asia adviser based in Hong Kong.
Rob Malley (president of the non-government organization) told Canadian consular officers that he had not given the access to talk to Kovrig yet. In fact, Rob also said that he thinks Michael was in China on personal matters at the time of his arrest.
He was not there for any illegal purpose that would ruin Chinese national security. Moreover, the Brussels-based firm also confirmed that they didn’t receive any information about him since his arrest.
